How does URGOnight work?

URGOnight is a daytime Sleep Training Program based on Neurofeedback. By training 3 times a week for 20 minutes, you teach your brain to produce brainwaves that are clinically associated with sleep. Visual and audio cues will notify you in real time when the headband detects these brainwaves. The more you train, the more you are able to identify which mental strategies or thoughts work best for you and learn to reproduce these brainwaves on demand, and you strengthen your neural network needed for sleep.

Does URGOnight emit waves or has side effects?

Rest assured, no waves are emitted and there are no side effects to your training! URGOnight is completely safe and natural. The headband simply measures your brainwaves, without emitting anything.

Science behind URGOnight
What should I expect from URGOnight? Will URGOnight work for everyone?

Since URGOnight is a Sleep Training Program, the results vary based on your ability to learn new skills. The effects it has on sleep are therefore different for everyone and depends on the consistency of your training.

In order to feel results, you should train at least 3 times a week. Studies have shown that the benefits of neurofeedback benefits start to appear after 15 to 20 sessions, which corresponds to about 5 to 10 weeks of regular training. For long-lasting effects, it is recommended to train a minimum of 40 sessions.

Lastly, to reap the fruits of your training, make sure you maintain a good sleep hygiene.

What is Neurofeedback? How does URGOnight use Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a training program based on visualizing what your brain does in real time. By using visual and audio cues, your brain learns to identify and produce brainwaves that impact sleep.

The process of Neurofeedback as it relates to URGOnight is as follows:

  1. The headband measures your brain activity.
  2. The app sends you visual and audio cues when the brainwave clinically associated with sleep is produced, also called SensoriMotor Rhythm (SMR).
  3. With more practice, you learn which mental strategies or thoughts can work best in generating these brainwaves.
What is unique in URGOnight’s approach?

URGOnight is the first sleep training device to bring clinical Neurofeedback technology in a simple, miniaturized and portable headband. It is also the only EEG headband used during the day, that targets SMR waves for sleep. You can get all the clinically proven benefits of Neurofeedback in the comfort of your own home, without all the hassle that comes with it!

No need to commute to your clinical appointments, simply perform your training on your couch, or wherever you feel most comfortable. Compared to traditional Neurofeedback, URGOnight doesn’t use any conductive gel, and you can do it on your own with our intuitive user interface. With the same clinical quality, you have full autonomy.

How does URGOnight work?

URGOnight is a daytime Sleep Training Program based on nNeurofeedback. By training 3 times a week for 20 minutes, you reeducate your brain to produce brainwaves that are clinically associated with sleep, called SMR (SensoriMotorRhythm) waves. Visual and audio cues will notify you in real time when the headband detects these brainwaves. The more you train, the more you are able to identify which mental strategies or thoughts work best for you and learn to reproduce SMR waves on demand, and you strengthen your neural network needed for sleep – falling asleep faster, sleep deeper and stay asleep longer.

What are SMR waves?

SMR are brainwaves that we produce when we are awake. Scientific studies have demonstrated that training SMR waves with Neurofeedback during the day improves sleep quality at night by decreasing the time to fall asleep and the number of nighttime awakenings.

How does URGOnight personalize my training?

We know that everyone learns at a different pace, so we personalize the training according to you!

Before each exercise, the difficulty level is adjusted. The level is determined based on the intensity of your SMR waves produced during the calibration phase at the beginning of each session. During the exercise, your difficulty level changes as well. By increasing the difficulty level, the threshold to create visual and visual audio cues increases.

You can find the highest level achieved at the end of your exercise, and you can view your progress in the Stats tab on the home page.

URGOnight has been designed to make your brain training exercises fun, attainable and challenging all at the same time! We know if you choose URGOnight, it means you want to be a better you at sleeping!

Can I train with my eyes closed?

We know you will be tempted to train with your eyes closed, but we highly recommend keeping your eyes open throughout the training sessions. This is how you and your brain will learn best!

After completing the 40 sessions, can I continue using URGOnight?

Of course! After 40 sessions, you can choose to adjust the frequency of your training to your needs and your pace. You can also reduce or stop the sessions once you feel you have achieved your desired sleep quality.

But after 40 sessions, most of our users have successfully incorporated URGOnight into their routine and continue the brain training exercises as they would like to maintain their newfound “sleep skill”.

In some exceptional circumstances, such as a very stressful life event or a trip causing jet lag, your sleep may be jeopardized. In this case, you can resume a few sessions just to get back on track!

What can I expect from the 40 sessions? Program Overview.

URGOnight is a sleep training program and, like any training, time and practice are necessary to experience long-lasting benefits. Studies have shown that the benefits of neurofeedback benefits start to appear after 15 to 20 sessions, which corresponds to about 5 to 10 weeks of regular training.

Here’s how the program would look like, it can vary greatly from one individual to another:

Sessions 1 to 5: Familiarize yourself with the application
Your first sessions on your own may bring up questions and you may not be sure of what you are required to do. Don’t fret, give yourself time to get used to the process, try out all the different features, sleep diary and themes. You can also customize your training reminders and set your favorite reward sounds.

Sessions 6 to 20: Find your technique and train your brain
The trickiest part of the training is to understand what triggers feedback in the exercises. To achieve this, pay attention to your feelings and thoughts while observing the feedback (visual and audio) on the app. Little by little, you will be able to associate your feelings with the visual and audio feedback you earn and identify which strategies or thoughts help you progress in the sessions. You have identified one or more techniques that seem to be right for you and you concentrate on the ones that bring you the most feedback. You increasingly master the training and succeed in producing more SMR waves and reaching higher levels.

Sessions 21 to 40: Take control of your sleep
Your several weeks of training begin to pay off. You increasingly notice the link between your mental state and the production of SMR during the exercises. You learn to control your brain activity. You should also begin to see the first benefits on your sleep: falling asleep more quickly, waking up less during the night.

Beyond 40 sessions
Your brain has absorbed the training and learned to produce SMR waves by itself. You take control of your sleep and can now adjust the frequency of your sessions to your needs, to make sure you are still on the right track.

How often should I train and how long does it take to notice results?

During the session, your brain is learning a new skill – producing SMR waves on demand. You must therefore separate each session with a night’s sleep to allow your brain to assimilate what it has learned.

We recommend that you do at least 3 sessions per week. Nevertheless, if it is easier for you to train on a more regular basis to stay consistent with your daily routine, by all means! In fact, some of our users choose to perform their training every day, in order to keep to a regular schedule. The goal is to find a rhythm that works best for you, and to stick with it.

Studies have shown that the benefits of Neurofeedback start to appear after 15 to 20 sessions, which corresponds to about 5 to 10 weeks of regular training. In order to have lasting effects, we recommend that you perform at least 40 sessions.

I have bought my URGOnight, how do I set it up and pair it with my phone?

The following is a brief summary. Please refer to your Starter Guide for more thorough instructions:

Step 1 – Install the electrodes and charge your headband until the orange LED lights turn off.
Step 2 – Adjust the headband so it fits your head comfortably and ensure good contact with the electrodes. You should feel the 4 electrodes through your hair.
Step 3 – Download the URGOnight application and set up an account.
Step 4 – Your application will take you through an Introductory video and an initiation session (virtual tour).
Step 5 – You are ready to start your first session, think of different strategies or thoughts and notice the visual and audio feedbacks that you receive, identify what works best for you.

I have set up my URGOnight, what should I do during the exercise?

First, find a quiet, calm place. Settle down in a comfortable position and relax your body. You are ready to begin your session.

A session is made up of 5 exercises of 3 minutes each and a 1-minute break in between each of them.

During the exercise:
Focus on your strategy and notice the visual and audio cues displayed in the app. These will help you identify whether your mental strategy works in generating brainwaves associated with sleep. Learn more on what strategies you can use.

During the break:
This is the time to allow your brain to relax between each exercise! Simply think of nothing, this will allow your brain to absorb all that it has learned over the last exercise.

What are the strategies and techniques I can use to help emit more sleep-inducing brainwaves?

A strategy is the thoughts that you will focus on during the exercises. Certain thoughts will help you create SMR waves. It’s up to you to determine which ones. Some of our users have found the following strategies that may also help you:

  • Clear your mind & push away unnecessary thoughts
  • Focus on your breathing & physical sensations
  • Imagine yourself swimming or doing something relaxing
  • Focus on a single point

Use your imagination! Each strategy is completely personal, what works for you might not work for someone else.

What is the introduction session for? Does it record my score?

The introduction session allows you to take a virtual tour of a session, without having to perform an exercise. It is simply to show you how it works, and no score is recorded. You can repeat it whenever you want a recap (or show a friend).

What do all the scores mean?

Your scores are not a direct reflection of your sleep quality. It is simply a measurement of the SMR waves that you have produced. Each individual is unique, and your scores are your own.

There are 2 general ways of understanding your score:

SMR score at the end of each exercise:
This score is a representation of the SMR waves produced, weighted by the highest level reached during your exercise. There are 5 of these exercises in 1 session.

Total Score at the end of each session:
This final score corresponds to the sum of scores for the exercises you have carried out during the session. You can follow your progress from one session to another. The first sessions may seem confusing and your scores may be low, but each additional point from one session to another is a successful improvement.

What tips can you provide to enhance my training sessions?

1) Find a quiet, cozy environment where you can feel like you are in your own bubble – no distractions.
2) Train when you are feeling awake and motivated.
3) Use earphones to have an immersive experience.
4) Activate the ‘do not disturb’ mode on your phone while you are training, this will help prevent notifications from interrupting your sessions.

Remember, you can see it as taking time out of the day just for some “me time”.

I am being interrupted, can I pause my training session?

You can pause your training at any time by clicking on the Pause icon at the top left of your exercise window.

An ideal training is one where you remain undisturbed during the whole session. Nevertheless, if you happen to be interrupted, simply get back into it once you can return to a calm state of mind.

Although an interrupted session isn’t great, it is better to be interrupted & start up again rather than giving up your session altogether.

Troubleshooting
I am not getting very high scores, why?

A low score may simply mean that the mental strategy or technique you are using is not working for you. It could also mean you are more tired from the day before or you aren't able to concentrate at your best. Don’t worry, this is completely natural, don’t pressure yourself. Do not give up, simply change your strategy and continue training regularly.

Scores are not a gauge of sleep quality, it is just a measurement of your brainwaves. Even if your score is low, it does not mean your brain is not learning. The most important thing is to be consistent in your training.

If robots appear often during your exercise, a low score might mean that the signal quality of your headband was weak and the measurement of brainwaves could have gone undetected.

I am getting very high scores without putting in the effort, why?

It is possible that when you were going through your calibration phase, you had kept your eyes open. This may have caused the measurement threshold of your brainwaves to be inaccurate, thus throwing off the scores as you practice. Try again on your next session to keep your eyes closed throughout the 30 second calibration phase.

I have trouble creating an account in my application.

If you are having troubles creating a new account, there could be 3 possible reasons:

  1. You are not connected to the internet, try connecting and create your account.
  2. Your email has already been used, either reset your password (check spam mail for password reset link) or create a new account with a new email address.
  3. The password that had created does not meet the requirements. Your password must contain a minimum of 8 characters, including: A capital letter, a number, a special character.
I have trouble logging into my account:
  1. Check that you have keyed in the same email address that you used to create your account and password
  2. Check that you are connected to the internet
I can’t connect my headband to my mobile application.
  1. Please ensure that you have activated your Bluetooth and geolocation.
  2. If you have activated Bluetooth and geolocation and it is still not connecting, please charge your headband, it might just be low on battery.
My electrodes don’t turn or stay green in the application.

If your electrodes don’t turn or stay green, this means your headband has a weak signal. Click on “My electrodes don’t turn green?”. This will redirect you to a graph that shows you your signal quality. The objective is to keep your signal below the pink line. Movements or bad contact of the electrodes on your skin, will cause the signal to be above the pink line. On the contrary, staying still and repositioning your electrodes to make sure it is in good contact with your skin, will lead to the signal dropping below the pink line.

Here are some tips to ensure having a good signal:

  • Make sure your shoulders and jaw are relaxed.
  • Make sure no one is walking around you.
  • Avoid resting your head on a cushion or chair headrest. The electrodes may no longer be in contact with your skin.
  • Avoid sitting within one meter of domestic appliances connected to the power grid: iron, refrigerator, blender, toaster, hair dryer, etc.
  • Try to move or readjust your headband. You should feel the 4 electrodes through your hair.

Once the 4 electrodes turn green, you can go on to the next step.

The robot in my application keeps telling me my signal quality is low “A weak signal is detected”, what’s wrong?

It means that the headband has a weak signal and does not sufficiently detect your brain activity. If the robot continues to appear even though your headband is correctly set up and you are not moving, take a short break and then resume the session.

If you regularly have robots during the exercises, you can measure the quality of your signal manually, by clicking on the tab More on the home page, and then Noise Visualization section.

The graph displayed is your signal quality.

  • Try to move or readjust your headband. You should feel the 4 electrodes through your hair. Make sure the 4 electrodes are in the right position.
When I carry out the noise visualization test, I am unable to keep my EEG signal below the pink line.

Here are some tips to ensure having a good signal:

  • Try to move or readjust your headband. You should feel the 4 electrodes through your hair. Make sure the 4 electrodes are in the right position.

Did you know the muscle signal is 1000 times stronger than the brain signal? Therefore, we advise you to remain as relaxed and still as possible during the sessions.

I frequently lose connection during my training sessions.

This could be caused by the low battery level of your headband or that you are sitting near electrical appliances that could interfere with the signal.

I’ve done some exercises, but why isn’t the session recorded in my application?

You must perform at least 3 exercises for the session to be recorded. Below 3 exercises, your brain would have had insufficient practice to assimilate what has been learned.

I do not hear the sound to open my eyes in the calibration process, nor during the sessions.

In order to be sure to hear the audio cue at the end of the 30 seconds of eyes closed, make sure to:

  • If you are an android user, please increase the media volume on your phone
  • If you are an iPhone user, please deactivate the silent button
  • Put on earphones
  • Move to a quieter environment
I have just changed my phone but I do not find the history of my past sessions.

This is because you had not synched your past sessions by connecting to the internet. If you still have your old phone, try connecting it to the internet, and then log out of your account. Now log in to URGOnight on your new phone, your past sessions should reappear.

I am unable to download the URGOnight application on the Play Store or App Store.

Please make sure you have a minimum Android 5 or iOS 11 requirement to be compatible with the application.

Why am I unable to practice immediately after 1 exercise, it says to wait 11 hours 59 minutes?

Just like training any muscle, it is important to have a night’s sleep in between two exercises to ensure your brain is well rested and has absorbed what is has learned during the day.
